Brekkie Down Under
In America, especially where we’re from in Los Angeles, brunch is a big deal. I figured the world “brunched” from time to time, but I had little personal experience with it outside of the US. France has the morning petit dejeuner followed by a proper dejeuner aka lunch. Spain has desayuno and of course their famous almuerzos; which are in turn followed quickly by a siesta. It turns out that Australians, more specifically the Sydney-siders know how to brunch really well. I suppose that it may come from their British lineage who created this culinary nod to the morning meal and plethora of possibilities of mid-day dining. Brunch in Sydney is GREAT!
The countless neighborhoods in Sydney each have their own culinary charm, character, and the popular brunch and “brekkie” joints usually aren’t too hard to find. One thing that we learned in the three months in Sydney is that the weather is almost always great, and the best way to explore the city is one brunch at a time. On one of our several brunch outtings, we grabbed a table outside the Royal Botanic Gardens on a beautiful day just before the brunch crowd came out in full force. The options were abundant, and the offerings would be right at home in any LA brunch spot. An overeasy egg served atop a medley of farm to table mixed greens tossed in a citrus vinaigrette; or sumptuous parmesan scrambled eggs served with house made wheat bread; and my new favorite petite brunch sandwich, a sweet roll egg and ham sandwich. Although this little guy seems like a nothing special breakfast sandwich, it’s the sweet roll that transforms it into both brunch and dessert.
A little touch of our Los Angeles home on an island far far away.
